Lady Spartans Soccer Win District Championship
Waynesville girls soccer won their second District Championship in a row by beating Anna 5-0 at Bellefontaine last night. The Lady Spartans set the tone early when they found the back of the net 3 minutes into the game. Sophomore Jillian Layne made a wide run for the ball and then found sophomore Samantha Erbach in the box for a beautiful shot past the goalkeeper’s fingertips. Although Waynesville worked to keep possession and had other shot opportunities, the 1st half ended with the Spartans leading 1-0. In the second half, the Lady Spartans took advantage of their shot opportunities when Erbach assisted senior Emma Whitaker for an early goal into the back of the net. Sophomore Brooke Woody made an all-out effort play to finished Whitaker’s deflected shot for goal #3. Goal #4 came when sophomore Kyla Harvey redirected a cross for sophomore Emme Greely to finish. Junior Laine Kuhns got her first goal of the season when she ripped a long shot off of Erbach’s pass that ricocheted into the net. Junior goalkeeper Gracyn Armstrong and her defense (senior Savanna Amburgy, senior Kate Handle, junior Allie Freese, Kuhns, Greely, and sophomore Kayann Whitt) held strong in the back earning their 11th shutout of the season.
