Community Service / Job Shadow Day

An alternative to the traditional school day! Completing the following requirements will count for your attendance, a homework grade in math class for the day, and you gain a unique learning experience! March 1, 2022 is an opportunity for current 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students to complete one of these activities in place of their traditional school day. Our juniors will be taking the State Funded ACT test in the building this day, so we are taking advantage of this opportunity to support our 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students and allow them to earn hours toward their Community Service Seal or gain valuable insight on possible career paths.

Community Service -Important Benefits

Engaging in community service provides students with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large. Community service or volunteerism enables students to acquire life skills and knowledge and provide a service to those who need it most.

Job Shadowing -Important Benefits

Job shadowing provides insight into a job outside of what can be achieved from reading about or completing research. It is a practical way of learning about a particular job and what it involves. Following and watching an experienced professional doing the job can be eye-opening. As a student you may know the career path you want to take, but either way, job shadowing will give you the behind the scenes look at certain career paths. It is a great Career Exploration activity.

Who: 9th, 10th and 12th grade students

What: Community Service or Job Shadow Day

When: March 1st, 2022 (unless the student opts to complete their community service prior to the “designated” day on 3/1) Paperwork should be turned in by March 2nd, 2022.

Where: This is up to the parent/ student. The student can choose if they want to shadow a particular career or find a community service to engage in for the day. See suggested list for community service opportunities in your Class Google Classroom. WHS is leaving this choice up to the student and family and what works best for your individual situations and/or goals. It may be just as simple as helping out a neighbor with a task for the day. The assignment will be posted in Google Classroom later this week with more details.

Why: Juniors will be taking the State Funded ACT on March 1st at WHS, and in past years all other students would be at home completing online assignments. We feel that this situation allows for a unique opportunity for students to participate in a community service or job shadow experience they may otherwise not get the chance to complete.
