Driving Training for ADHD Teens offered by Cincinnati Children's
Cincinnati Children's is now offering FOCAL (Enhanced Focused Concentration and Attention Learning) training to teens. While it is particularly aimed at teens with ADHD, it could be helpful to all teens. It can also provide some peace of mind for parents. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, crash rates for new drivers with ADHD for the first month after licensure is 62% higher than drivers without ADHD, and the four-year crash rate of drivers with ADHD is 37% higher. The training works by using simulated driving and eye tracking technology to train teens to limit extended glances away from the roadway. This is because people with ADHD often have difficulty sustaining visual attention to the roadway, especially when distracted. Follow-up studies have shown that those in the control group had far more uncontrolled glances as compared to the FOCALplus drivers, giving the FOCALplus-trained teens a 42% edge.
The FOCALplus training consists of 5 weekly training sessions, and parents/caregivers are involved together for the first and final training sessions, so they can learn about the skills taught and can reinforce these skills with their teens. The cost is $250 and you can find more information on the following website
