Board Member Spotlight - Amanda Garrett - 2024
Board Member Spotlight
January is School Board Recognition Month & we continue to celebrate our Board of Education members who dedicate countless hours to the success of our district! This week, we are featuring Board Member Amanda Garrett.
Amanda Garrett, Board Member
Newly elected in 2024 and sworn in on January 8th, Wayne Local Board of Education
Also Serves on:
Historical Preservation Board (for the Village of Waynesville)
What is the one top reason why you love our district so much?
"Our history of academic achievement has always made me proud both as a member of the alumni and as a parent of children in the district. I am such a people person however, that my favorite thing is the community we have built and the sense of belonging that we create starting at the school. It is my belief that the school is the hub of any great community and the culture that is present at Wayne Local Schools is seen throughout the village. We always show up for each other."
What is the Best Part About Serving as a BOE Member?"
"I really enjoy hearing from parents in the community and the staff. Without that open communication I think the value of the position could get a bit lost. I have much to learn, but the things I have learned so far have been through conversations and listening to the different experiences everyone has as a part of the district. There really isn't anything better than interacting with people outside of your normal circle. It really broadens the lens and helps uncover the right problems to solve and the right successes to build on."
Have You or a Family Member Ever Worked/Volunteered in Waynesville Schools in Another Roll?
"I have had two great uncles (John Sackett and Walter Lamb) serve on the Wayne Local Board of Education. My great uncle (Anthony Lamb) served as custodian for decades. My sister (Beverly Garrett/Blevins) and my cousin (Benny Purkey) both served as bus drivers. My mother (Betty Garrett) was a makeup artist for many of the drama clubs productions as well as tailoring costumes. My cousin (Becky Cook) was the substitute School Nurse for 12 years. There is more...my family is way too big..."
"If you pair the amount of alumni that still reside within the district, that chose to have their own children attend our school with the people that are moving here based on the reputation of our schools…well I think that says most of what needs to be said. It’s a great place and will continue to be as long as we keep climbing, focus on the right things, and work together. Oh and the class of 1998 was the best class ever."
