On April 9th at 2:15 am, 18 students from Waynesville High School set off on an adventure to Andros Island in the Bahamas.   Under the leadership of high school teacher, Patrick Hardin, Waynesville High School’s Marine Biology class had the option to participate in a week-long adventure to study marine life, coastal ecosystems, Bahamian history and culture of Andros Island.  While there, the students explored many natural wonders in a hands-on learning experience.

Every day, the students snorkeled to explore coral reefs, mangrove wetlands, oceanic blue holes, and even shipwrecks.  While snorkeling, students spotted various types of coral, a nurse shark, sting rays, parrotfish and angelfish among others!  Students also learned about the geology of Andros Island by climbing Morgan’s Bluff and inland blue holes.  While exploring the geology and life of the marine ecosystems, students had the privilege to meet Bahamians and learn about the rich history of the island and its culture.  Students met Bahamian wood carvers, basket weavers, and spongers.  They also learned about bush medicine, the use of plants to treat medical conditions with the chance to taste different types of medicinal teas.  It was an amazing, life-enriching experience with a group of wonderful students!!
